Bernard Vos | Sixteen Months. Zero to Ironman.

An unlikely starting point became a remarkable transformation — proving that with commitment, structure and belief, the athlete you become can be very different from the one you start as.

THE JOURNEY

From absolute zero to Ironman in 16 months.

Bernard Vos started endurance sport with demanding work, family commitments and no recent background in intense sport. With MCC, structured training turned an ambitious goal into a full Ironman finish.

When I look back at where I started, it is actually difficult to believe where I am today.

I’m 41 years old and work as a project manager in the civil engineering industry. I spend much of my time away from home on construction sites, where long hours, constant site logistics and travelling are part of the job.

So when I started getting into endurance sport, I quickly realised that fitting training into my life was going to be a challenge.

I hadn’t played intense sport since my school days. I was new to endurance sport and wanted to see what I was capable of, but I knew I couldn’t just wing it.

My first goals were to complete a 70.3 Ironman and, eventually, a full Ironman.

At that stage, the full distance felt like a long way away.

Finding a way to make it work

My biggest hurdle wasn’t motivation. It was managing training load, consistency and daily energy while trying to balance work, family and training across swimming, cycling and running.

I needed a system that removed the guesswork. That’s what I found with MCC.

Having my training planned weeks in advance made a huge difference. I could see what was coming and fit the sessions around my professional and family commitments.

More importantly, I started understanding why I was doing each session.

The training had a purpose. And the progress became tangible.

I went from struggling through my first 1.6 km treadmill run in more than 15 minutes to breaking 30 minutes for 5 km, going under an hour for 10 km and eventually running a half marathon in under two hours.

For me, though, the biggest breakthrough was learning how to pace and fuel myself for long efforts.

The goals started changing

As my endurance developed, so did my ambitions.

I completed multiple 70.3 Ironman events, including three half Ironmans within a 12-month period, with strong bike-to-run executions.

Then I decided to take on something completely different.

The Munga Grid North West is a brutal 450 km single-stage mountain-bike race.

I had only owned a mountain bike for seven months.

I finished it in 41 hours.

There were also road-running races, other triathlons, mountain-bike races and swim events.

A lot of things that, when I started, I would never have thought possible.

And somewhere along the way, the full Ironman stopped feeling impossible.

The Ironman

With the endurance base and mental resilience I had built, I was ready to take on the Ironman Africa Champs.

I finished in 13 hours and 8 minutes.

Going from an absolute zero to completing a full Ironman took just 16 months with MCC.

That achievement means a lot to me.

But when I think about the journey, it’s not only the Ironman that stands out.

I’ve become a much more self-aware athlete. I understand race strategy, recovery, nutrition and execution under pressure. I understand that endurance isn’t simply about training harder. It’s about knowing what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and trusting the process.

MCC showed me that “anything is possible” isn’t just a slogan you read on an Ironman shirt.

It can actually happen.

“It can actually happen.”

What I’d say to another athlete

If you’re balancing a demanding profession and want to find out what you’re truly capable of, having the right coach makes a massive difference.

For me, MCC took away the stress of planning so I could focus on execution.

It was personalised coaching that delivered tangible results without me having to sacrifice the rest of my life.
